WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) promises to fill the gap between Wireless LANs and wide area networks and claims to be a cost-effective fixed wireless alternative to conventional wire-line DSL and cable connections. Industry’s high-gloss brochures list various advantages of WiMAX like interoperability due to certified equipment, non line of sight applications, peak data rates of up to 72 Mbit/s and service area ranges of up to 50 km.
