UMTS - TECHNICAL PRINCIPLES AND RADIO NETWORK PLANNING

Training Focus

UMTS is coming up with rich features like mixture of data and voice services. Besides the benefits for the user the new air interfaces based on W-CDMA challenge both operators and hardware suppliers in the fields of network planning and realization as well-understood procedures used for the realization of recent 2G networks do not apply any more.

After the first lecture, in which the historical background of UMTS is outlined, the training will summarize common approaches and methods for cellular network planning. In the ongoing lectures the principles of CDMA mobile networks as well as technical key parameters of UMTS are considered. The impacts of the W-CDMA air interface on issues for radio network planning will be studied and an appropriate planning approach will be developed.

Course Objectives

After the training the participants will know the principles of W-CDMA mobile networks in general and the technical key parameters of UMTS in particular. Special issues of radio network planning for UMTS will be understood.
